What is the Fraction Calculator?

In mathematics, a fraction is a number that represents a part of a whole. It consists of a numerator (the top number) and a denominator (the bottom number). The numerator represents the number of equal parts you have, while the denominator is the total number of parts that make up a whole.

The Fraction Calculator is a powerful, multi-purpose mathematical tool designed to help you quickly perform arithmetic on both simple fractions, mixed numbers, and extremely large numbers (Big Integers). It simplifies the manual process of finding common denominators, multiplying reciprocals, and simplifying results into their lowest forms.

How to Use This Calculator

Our tool offers four distinct calculation modes, all unified into one interface:

  • Calculate Fractions: Select this mode to add, subtract, multiply, or divide two fractions. You can input whole numbers to work with mixed fractions. If you are calculating simple fractions, leave the 'Whole' fields blank.
  • Simplify a Fraction: Enter a numerator and denominator, and the calculator will automatically divide them by their Greatest Common Factor (GCF) to present the fraction in its lowest terms.
  • Decimal to Fraction: Enter any decimal (e.g., 0.1234), and the calculator will find the exact fractional equivalent by establishing the proper power of 10 for the denominator and simplifying.
  • Fraction to Decimal: Quickly divide a numerator by a denominator to get the precise decimal representation.

The Formula & Methods Used

Unlike calculating simple integers, fractions require distinct rules depending on the operation being performed.

Addition & Subtraction

Adding and subtracting fractions requires a common denominator. One method for finding a common denominator involves multiplying the numerators and denominators of all fractions by the product of the denominators of the opposing fraction. Our calculator uses the Least Common Multiple (LCM) to efficiently find the lowest possible common denominator before combining numerators.

Addition Formula:
(a / b) + (c / d) = (ad + bc) / bd

Subtraction Formula:
(a / b) - (c / d) = (ad - bc) / bd

Multiplication & Division

Multiplying fractions is straightforward. It is not necessary to compute a common denominator. Simply multiply the numerators together to form the new numerator, and multiply the denominators together to form the new denominator.

For division, the process requires you to multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second fraction (flipping the second fraction's numerator and denominator).

Multiplication Formula:
(a / b) × (c / d) = (ac) / (bd)

Division Formula:
(a / b) ÷ (c / d) = (a / b) × (d / c) = (ad) / (bc)

Frequently Asked Questions

The numerator is the top number in a fraction, representing how many parts of the whole you have. The denominator is the bottom number, representing the total number of parts that make up a whole. For example, in 3/8, 3 is the numerator and 8 is the denominator.

No, the denominator of a fraction can never be 0. Dividing any number by zero makes the fraction undefined in mathematics. Our calculator will immediately flag an error if 0 is entered as a denominator.

A mixed number is a combination of a whole number and a proper fraction. For example, 2 3/4 is a mixed number. In our calculator, you can compute these by entering the whole number in the designated 'Whole' box next to your fraction.

To simplify a fraction, you must find the Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of both the numerator and the denominator, and then divide both numbers by that factor. For instance, the GCF of 220 and 440 is 220, so dividing both by 220 gives you the simplified fraction 1/2.

The calculator determines the number of places to the right of the decimal point. It uses that count as a power of 10 for the denominator. For example, for 0.1234, the number extends 4 decimal places, making the denominator 10,000. The fraction becomes 1234/10000, which is then simplified to 617/5000.
