The Formula / The Science

Concrete volume is determined by basic geometric volume formulas depending on the shape of the pour. Once the base volume is found in cubic feet, it is converted into cubic yards (by dividing by 27) and cubic meters (by multiplying by 0.0283).

Slab Volume Formula: Volume = Length × Width × Height × Quantity
Round Column/Hole Formula: Volume = π × (Diameter / 2)² × Depth × Quantity
Bag Calculation: Total Bags = Total Cubic Feet ÷ Bag Yield (ft³)

Density and Yield Note: Standard premixed concrete weighs roughly 133 pounds per cubic foot (or about 2130 kg per cubic meter). A standard 80-pound bag yields about 0.60 cubic feet of wet concrete, whereas a 60-pound bag yields approximately 0.45 cubic feet. You can alter these values in the Advanced Options panel.

Yes, absolutely. It is standard industry practice to order or purchase 5% to 10% more concrete than your exact calculated volume. This buffer accounts for uneven subgrades, minor measurement discrepancies, spillage, and mixing waste. Running out of concrete mid-pour is a major problem that can compromise the structural integrity of the entire slab, leading to cold joints.

One cubic yard equals exactly 27 cubic feet. A standard 80-pound bag of premixed concrete typically yields 0.60 cubic feet. Therefore, you need exactly 45 bags of 80-pound concrete to make one full cubic yard (27 ÷ 0.60 = 45 bags). Similarly, it takes 60 bags of 60-pound mix to equal one cubic yard.

For small projects (1-5 bags), mixing in a sturdy wheelbarrow with a hoe or shovel is generally sufficient. Add water gradually according to the bag's instructions until it reaches an oatmeal-like consistency. For larger projects requiring 10 or more bags, renting an electric or gas-powered portable cement mixer is highly recommended to ensure a consistent mix and to prevent the first batch from drying before the final batch is poured.

While concrete may harden enough to walk on safely within 24 to 48 hours, the internal curing process is much slower. It typically takes about 28 days for standard residential concrete to reach 90% or more of its final compressive strength. Keeping the concrete damp during the first few days of curing (by misting it or covering it with plastic) helps maximize its final structural strength.

Generally, if your project requires more than 1 or 1.5 cubic yards (which is equivalent to 45 to 68 80-lb bags), it is vastly more cost-effective and significantly less labor-intensive to order a ready-mix concrete truck delivery rather than mixing bags by hand. Deliveries ensure a perfectly uniform mix and allow you to complete the pour rapidly.
